MANDEVILLE CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER FORMAL OPPOSITION TO FRACKING

By TONI ELLINGTON

Mandeville City Councilman David Ellis has proposed a resolution which calls for a ban on hydraulic fracturing in St. Tammany Parish. The proposed resolution specifically opposes the plans of Helis Oil and Gas, LLC to drill a well in the Parish. The resolution urges regulators to deny Helis Oil the authorizations required for it to move forward with drilling.

Mandeville Mayor, Donald Villere has also expressed opposition to the drilling.

In May, 2014, the City Council of Slidell, Louisiana, adopted a similar resolution to prohibit fracking. The mayors of Covington and Abita Springs, Louisiana, have made statements opposing fracking.

Helis Oil has not yet applied to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources for a drilling permit. Helis Oil has applied for a wetlands permit from the Army Corps of Engineers and water quality certification from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

The Mandeville City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. in the City Hall on June 25, 2014.
