COURT CHALLENGES TO EPA ACTIONS AND PROPOSED RULE ON EMISSIONS

By TONI ELLINGTON

Murray Energy Corporation announced on June 18, 2014, that it is filing suit in the U.S. District Court, D.C. Circuit, to challenge the EPA’s proposed rule to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants.  Murray claims that the proposed rule will eliminate millions of jobs.

On the flip side, three environmental groups announced on June 18, 2014, that they plan to sue the EPA for failing to ensure that nine states and Puerto Rico are in compliance with air quality standards for lead.  These groups are the Center for Biological Diversity, the Center for Environmental Health, and the Clean Air Council.  The groups have issued a formal notice of intent to sue to the EPA.
