By TONI ELLINGTON

Southern Power Company, subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, announced on March 31, 2015, that it would purchase a $397 million wind farm in Oklahoma once the construction of the project is completed in late 2015.  The wind farm is being constructed by Apex Clean Energy of Charlottesville, Virginia.  The wind farm is located in a remote area of Kay County, Oklahoma.

Southern Company (NYSE: SO) is a premier energy company servicing mainly the southeast United States.  Southern Power owns 22 power facilities in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Southern Power already owns eight solar energy projects in partnership with other companies, and owns one of the nation’s largest biomass power plants in Nacogdoches, Texas.  The Kay County wind farm will be the company’s first wind energy project and its largest renewable energy project to date.

Once completed, the Kay County wind farm will produce enough energy to power 100,000 homes with 130 wind turbines.
