ALABAMA WOMAN SENTENCED TO TWO YEAR PRISON TERM FOR FRAUDULENT OIL SPILL CLAIMS

By TONI ELLINGTON

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama has sentenced a woman to two years in prison for defrauding the Deepwater Horizon fund for claims related to the 2010 oil spill.

The court ordered Crystal L. Kitt to serve the two year prison term and to repay the $951,400 paid to her for fraudulent claims. Kitt was arrested for helping prepare more than 100 fraudulent claims in the names of other people for the oil spill.  Some of the people whose names were used were unaware that claims had been filed.

Kitt used her personal bank account to deposit checks made out to the claimants.  She used addresses in Mobile, Alabama in the fraudulent claims submitted to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility.
