GEISMAR, LA ETHYLENE PLANT STARTS PRODUCTION

By TONI ELLINGTON

Williams Partners LP, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based company, announced last week that it had started production of ethylene for sale at its Geismar, Louisiana olefins plant.  The plant has been newly rebuilt and expanded.

Ethylene is a hydrocarbon widely used in the chemical industry for making plastics, and as an ingredient in products such as detergents and antifreeze.  It can also be used in the agriculture business to hasten the ripening of fruit.

The production had been delayed following an explosion at the site in June 2013. The explosion was believed to have been caused by the failure of a heat exchanger.  Two workers were killed and 114 were injured in the explosion.

Williams Partners LP is an energy infrastructure company which focuses on connecting North America’s hydrocarbon resource plays to markets for natural gas, natural gas liquids, and olefins.  Its operations span from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian oil sands.
