CLAIMS DEADLINE FOR BP ECONOMIC AND PROPERTY DAMAGE CLAIMS SET

By TONI ELLINGTON

Following the denial by the U.S. Supreme Court of BP PLC’s appeal of the lower court rulings not to reconsider its settlement, the Claims Center has set a June 8, 2015 deadline for persons and businesses to file claims related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill under the Economic and Property Damages Settlement.  This deadline applies to economic loss claims for businesses.  It does not apply to claims for seafood-related businesses.

The deadlines for filing claims under the Medical Benefits Settlement and the Seafood Compensation Program have passed.

The Economic and Property Damages Settlement applies to people and businesses doing business in specified Gulf Coast areas or Gulf of Mexico waters between April 20, 2010 and April 16, 2012, where those persons or businesses lost profits, income, or earnings.  The settlement also applies to owners of coastal rental properties and businesses that began operating before November 1, 2008, and stopped operating, entered bankruptcy, or liquidated assets between May 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011.

Certain seasonal employees, periodic vendors, or festival vendors who suffered economic losses are covered under the settlement.  Real property owners of residential property who sold real property at a lower price because of the oil spill between April 21, 2010 and December 31, 2010 may also be entitled to a settlement.

Maps of the coastal zones subject to the settlement, as well as details about the settlement, are available at www.deepwaterhorizoneconomicsettlement.com.  For assistance with your claim, call (504) 599-8500.
