SENATE CONFIRMS COMMISSIONER TO NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

By TONI ELLINGTON

On December 8, 2014, the Senate confirmed Jeffrey M. Baran to be a commissioner on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”).  Baran had been appointed as an Interim Commissioner.  He will serve a five-year term on the NRC.

The NRC is a five-member commission with the stated goal of protecting people and the environment.  The commissioners are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.  The chairman, who is also named by the President, is Allison M. McFarlane.  The NRC formulates policies and develops regulations governing nuclear reactors and nuclear materials safety.  It also issues orders to licensees and adjudicates legal matters.

Prior to service on the NRC, Commissioner Baran worked for the U.S. House of Representatives for eleven years and served as the Staff Director for Energy and Environmental for the Democratic staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  He has been involved in coordinating the efforts of six federal agencies, including the NRC, and two Native American tribes to clean up uranium contamination in the Navajo Nation.  He was born and raised in the Chicago area and holds a law degree from Harvard Law School.
