HEARING SET ON SETTLEMENT IN BAYOU CORNE SINKHOLE LITIGATION

By TONI ELLINGTON

The proposed settlement for residents of Assumption Parish affected by a sinkhole near Bayou Corne is being reviewed by a special master prior to a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Jay Zainey on August 13, 2014.  Judge Zainey will review the fairness of the proposed settlement process with property owners who filed a class action lawsuit against Texas Brine for damages from the sinkhole.

Residents who decide to opt out of the settlement must complete claims forms by July 19, 2014.  In addition to the claims from these residents, several other lawsuits are pending related to the sinkhole.

Texas Brine has reached agreements with a number of affected homeowners to purchase their homes.  The company is also working to vent and burn off methane gas which is being released in the area of the sinkhole.

Officials report that the sinkhole has grown to 32.2 acres.
