Last week, lawsuits were filed by the families of two employees of DuPont Company who were killed on November 15, 2014, in a chemical release at the plant in LaPorte, Texas. The lawsuits are pending in the Harris County, Texas district court.
The incident involved a leak of methyl mercaptan at the plant. Methyl mercaptan is a product used to create crop-protection products such as insecticides and fungicides. It is also commonly used to add smell to natural gas for safety purposes. Methyl mercaptan has a smell similar to rotten eggs.
Four workers were killed and one worker was injured in the release.
The plaintiffs in the pending lawsuits claim that DuPont was negligent or grossly negligent in maintaining its LaPorte plant. The families seek injunctions to bar DuPont from destroying any evidence related to the incident. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has sent a team to the plant to investigate the accident. A DuPont spokesman said a valve failed on a container of methyl mercaptan, which cased the leak.
